As the first golden rays of dawn flood out of the east, you open your eyes to see the half-invisible archway shimmering in the air in front of you. Reverently you touch your fingertips to your forehead and then to the center of the arch. Yellow and white twinklings of light spread out from your fingers across its surface and a soft breeze begins blowing around you. As you step through the gate, you catch the scent of incense and hear a joyous symphony of birdsong. You have entered the home of the sylphs...

The Eastern Keep
High above the walls of the majestic Grey School castle, framed by the flaming yellow-orange hues of the Dawn, stands The Eastern Keep. The gray outer walls are draped in yellow banners boasting the crest of the Sylphs' House. No doorway can be seen for only those who hold the password of knowledge may enter here. Will the Sorting Staff impart the secret word to you? Find out.
Within these walls awaits our common room, The Tower, where you
will find the company of your Housemates. The Keep is also where you
will find the arcane wisdom of the Sylphs' Spell Book and The Book of
We call the Guardians of the East to watch over and protect this school.
We call the Sylphs of the Air to inspire our intellect and the pursuit of knowledge.
Let Dawn break. May the Light fill us!

Definition: "Living for a thousand years without seeming to age, they are beautiful creatures that parallel nymphs, only they exist in the element of air. Living on the tops of high places such as mountains and cliffs, slyphs vary in size, are winged, transparent, elusive and surrounded by a glowing radiance. For a very brief time, they can take on human form. They move by floating about with the wind, and as such, are known as the Spirit faeries of the air. They inspire mortals, especially those involved in the creative arts." -from Faery Magick by Sirona Knight
Totem: Hawk - known for his nobility. He plans carefully and keeps his life in proper perspective. He is courageous, yet wise. Hawk has superb vision, flies rapidly and far, is a skilled hunter, and is loyal to his life-mate.
Thoughts on these Correspondences
"Sylphs" are fairy-like creatures that reside at high altitudes like in mountains and treetops. They are also elemental spirits of air.
Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius (my sign) are the zodiacal signs of the Slyphs. I think it is reasonable to put those signs in the same group because the people who are born under them usually have similar personalities and interests.
The name-number of "Sylph" is 8 but the name-number of "Sylphs" is 9. I prefer the name-number 9 because "Sylphs" signify that we are all a team, and the whole House is included under this plural noun.
Our living totem is the hawk because it is noble, wise, courageous, and sensibly cautious. These are all traits the Sylph House members wish to gain as they travel on the road of life.
The Sylph patron spirit is Ariel. Ariel was a Slyph in a play written by William Shakespeare.
The colors associated with my House are yellow and white. To me, the two colors bring up images of sunny days with a nice, playful breeze (like our element, air). The planets are Uranus, Venus, and Mercury; they are three planets that are linked with the Sylph House's sun signs.
Our patron, Ariel, was a Sylph in a play written by William Shakespeare. Sylphs are elemental spirits of Air, often depicted as cloud beings, angels or bird-winged faeries. Their name comes from the Greek word, “silphe,” meaning butterfly or moth. Sylphs are sky-dwellers and wind-walkers. Birds, flying insects, and indeed, all sky-dwellers are within their domain. This includes mythological creatures such as gryphons, harpies, dragons, winged lions, jinn, flying horses, winged sphinx, and of course many sacred birds such as the Phoenix, the Benu and Feng-huang, as well. There are many to learn about and from!
